Actually, some are a little bit hard. But I missed the one about diesel fuel efficiency. I knew that! Brain fart.

So did you answer “because coal rolling” or “actually, they aren’t”?

Those were so easy and oversimplified that I started second guessing myself thinking they were trick questions.

Mr. Pedant here to announce that the diesel engine doesn’t contain more energy. In fact no engine actually contains any energy, they simply convert the potential energy contained in fuel to kinetic energy.

Diesel fuel contains only slightly more energy per mass than gasoline, but the combustion cycle is much more efficient due to its significantly higher compression ratio (and some other things).

I did the same thing...i should have re-read it when i hesitated and was like “well it’s not literally going to explode though”

29 for me. I didn’t know that you could “use any fuel” in a steam engine.

29/30. I got hung up on where the power comes from when the engine is running. For some reason I thought it always came from the battery and the alternator’s only job was to keep it charged.

29 out of 30. Messed up a bit on the alternator / battery question.

The engine question could be tricky, some engines just turn gas into noise and tire smoke.

That’s not a bad way to think about it, but the alternator should always be at a higher voltage than the battery. Another way to think about it is that you can disconnect your battery (after you start it) and the car will still run.

You are totally correct.

Looking at that question again, it was worded poorly.

The question was:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The “correct” answer was “because it contains more energy”. The “it” referring to the engine, not the fuel. Even if it said, “Because diesel fuel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline.” The question would have to be, “What is one of the factors...”

Technically the answer is incorrect. Vehicles are designed to draw power from the battery and the alternator maintains the voltage level in the battery. A Ram 1500's alternator only outputs about 160-180 Amps, and using ever circuit available would overwhelm them. For example, activating the heated seats/wheel/headlamps/accessory outlet/big stereo/fuel pump/cooling fans/power seats/abs pump/electric steering all at once would have a cumulative draw of over 200 amps. All the sensitive electronics depend on a stable battery voltage, and running the system just off the alternator results in approximately a billion trouble codes related to supply voltage to the various modules. Modern vehicles are not designed to draw power directly from the alternator.

Edit - In any case, a poorly written question and answer. They insinuate that the battery has no purpose other then starting.
